Confirmation

The three Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist complete a person's initiation into Christ's Holy Catholic Church. Through the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Gift of the Holy Spirit received in Holy Baptism is strengthened so that fully initiated Catholics may boldly witness their faith to the world through word and deed.

Here at St. Michael Church, our 7th and 8th grade students receive the Sacrament of Confirmation every other year. They attend a special Program that provides catechesis for the reception of the Sacrament and they also attend a Retreat. Presently, St. Michael Parish takes part in a Deanery celebration of Confirmation with our Bishop at the Cathedral.

"Sponsors" for Confirmation are to be active Catholics, at least 16 years of age, and are to participate in a Sponsors Program either at St. Michael Church or at their own parish. The Sponsor will need to provide a letter from their pastor. It is preferred that the Sponsor be one of the student's Godparents. Parents do act in the role of Sponsor. A "proxy" sponsor can be chosen. If the family is new to the parish, a Sponsor can be appointed by the Pastor/Deacon.

Young people, young adults who have not been confirmed are asked to take part in the RCIA Program (under Faith Formation tab) or a specially arranged program.

Confirmation will take place at a date to be announced at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

Eucharist (First Communion)

Here at St. Michael Parish we receive the Eucharist under both species of bread and wine. The decision for a child to receive the wine is one for the parents to make. Many of our children do receive the Body and Blood of Jesus.

For our senior parishioners and anyone who needs special assistance for the reception of the Eucharist, the front pews are reserved at all Masses.

Those parishioners who cannot come to the Weekend Liturgies are taken the Eucharist by our Communion Ministers during the week. Also those who are in Nursing Care facilities and Assisted Living residences receive the Eucharist by our Communion Ministers. The Eucharist is also taken to parishioners who are in the local hospitals by our Communion Ministers.

First Holy Communion is usually celebrated with our 2nd graders in the Spring. Children need to be enrolled in PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) or a Catholic school in order to receive this Sacrament.

First Communion will take place on a future designated Sunday in May at the 11 a.m. Mass.  Your child needs to be attending PREP classes to be able to receive their First Communion on that date.  First Penance will be celebrated on a future designated Thursday in April at  7 p.m.  Contact the Parish Office if you have a child who needs to be prepared for First Penance and First Communion.

Reconciliation

Every Saturday afternoon from 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm in the Reconciliation Room, a priest is usually available to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To make an appointment for Reconciliation, please call the Parish Office and request an appointment.

Two Parish Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent. The parish makes available to the people attending normally FIVE priests to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The 2nd graders sometimes will make their First Reconciliation during the Advent Penance Service.

First Reconciliation - our children are normally prepared in the 2nd grade. It is preferred that the children make their First Reconciliation before making their First Communion. Either by parents' or the catechist's discernment of the child's readiness, the celebration of the First Reconciliation can be moved to a later date prior to First Communion.
